Inaugural Edition
BEADS starts with a firm belief in the power of art and the creative spirit of Odisha to make people's lives better. It is no surprise then that for the inaugural edition we draw inspiration from the awe- inspiring culture of Odisha's indigenous peoples specifically the Dongria Kondh of the Niyamgiri hills.
The Dongria Kondh derive their name from dongar, meaning ‘agricultural land on hill slopes’, and the name for themselves is Jharnia – "protector of streams". They worship Niyamraja, the supreme god of the Niyamgiri jungle, believing him to be the source of their essential resources. This respect for nature pervades their life and their art - which in its triangular designs reveres the mountains.
This edition celebrates their art , their culture , their lives and their motifs in a series of delicately designed ceramic works that are at once art and objects of daily use. We invite you to immerse yourself in this celebration where each object is imbued with a bit of what makes Odisha special.

Artistin Residency
Spring 2022 collection!
BEADS collaboration with Saroj stretches back to a residency he completed under the guidance of our Chief Design Mentor Jagannath Panda at his foundation Utsha in Bhubaneswar. In that residency Saroj , always keen to experiment with unfamiliar forms and traditions that would stretch his imagination and craft, discovered the artwork and motifs of the Dongria Kondh.
In his own words :
"They had fascinating designs in ornamentation , floor painting , clothing and house decoration which I felt was something I wanted to experiment on in ceramics. The triangle , a repeated shape in all of the Kondh designs became a key subject of experimentation. I have since created hundreds of functional drawings and several ceramic shapes including cutlery , plates and mugs using these designs."
His work was further inspired by a visit to the Niyamgiri hills in 2018 where he experienced first-hand the culture that had fascinated him so. Our collaboration with Saroj builds on the years of introspection and observation rendered in ceramic forms that serve to fascinate us all .
